Overview
Jan Marini Skin Research is a privately held personal care
products manufacturer that specializes in skin care items, such as C-ESTA, Age
Intervention, and Bioglycolic. The firm also markets a line of professional and
clinical products that are available only by prescription. The company was
founded by Jan Marini in the year 1994. Located in San Jose, CA, Jan Marini Skin
Research has quickly grown in size from a small office in California to a
"world-renowned power in the market with employees across the county and
distributors around the world" with estimated sale of $7.6 million (est.). It
products are sold through distributors in more than 80 countries around the
world and directly to physicians and licensed skin care professionals.
Product Lines Bioglycolic
Line includes products based on a glycolic acid also known as an
"alpha hydroxy acid" or "AHAs" that occur naturally in various fruits and foods.
Glycolic acid that was found in sugar cane has received the most medical
attention because of its small molecule size which allows glycolic acid to
penetrate more effectively and to bring about the most dramatic and beneficial
change. Compared to other AHAs (glycolic acid) it has the greatest effect
compared to any other source. One other property of the glycolic acid is its
loosening property on the glue-like attachments that is characteristic of many
skin conditions including acne, environmental aging (photodamage), and hyper-
pigmentation. This allows glycolic acid to act as a phenomenal resurfacing agent
that can improve appearance of the skin and potentially reduce the depth of acne
scarring among its many other positive effects. Jan Marini has created
Bioglycolic products to deliver the above benefits to its customers.
C-Esta
Line is based on a long established medical fact about the role
Vitamin C plays in skin's functioning. Vitamin C is essential for skin's
protection from UV damage and rejuvination from sun-induced aging factors.
Furthermore, Vitamin C has been proven to be transfered into the skin cells
through topical application. Topical application is a complex process involving
stabilization, optimum skin absorption and adequate levels of activity. C-ESTA
containing DAE Complex is the result of 12 years of medical research resulting
in the first stabilized form of lipid soluble topically applied Vitamin C in a
patented delivery vehicle, combined with other essential factors.
The Age Intervention Line is an anti-aging technology designed for adult
women. It addresses the appearance of aging skin changes by targeting hormonal
levels and changes associate with sun exposure. As females age and hormonal
levels drop, the atrophy of sebaceuous glands contribute to drier skin.
Furthermore, the declining levels of estrogen results in lower moisture content
thus contributing to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Thinning of
dermis, sparser elastin fibers, variations in collagen production are among
other hormonally related changes that occur in adult women. The second aspect of
the aging skin process is the sun exposure. Two major factors are involved in
photo damaged skin are impaired immune function and inflammatory actions. The
Age Intervention Line addresses the above factors by recapturing the skin's
normal hormonal balance and boosting the skin's ability to repair damage and
preventing certain inflammatory actions by using a combination of topical
agents.
Transformation
Line focuses on Transformation Growth Factor (TGF Beta-1), Thymosin
Beta-4, Pentapeptides, and Vascular Epithelial Growth Factor (VGF) to deliver a
breakthrough in anti-aging technology. TGF Beta-1 is a form of cytokine
technology that is believed to have properties of a cellular mediator by
signaling certain cellular activities like those necessary to retain the
appearance of young, healthy skin. One medical researcher believes that TGF
Beta-1 may be the answer to keeping skin young indefinitely. Thymousin Beta-4 is
a string of 43 amino acid peptides that assist in regulating immune cells and is
also a powerful anti-inflammatory and wound healing agent. On-going research has
demonstrated its effect on aging skin, because of its ability to communicate
cells and direct important aspects of critical functions, reducing free radical
activity and by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
Pentapeptides are tiny strings of amino acids that can communicate with cells by
directly improving or correcting instructions that the cell needs in order to
function properly. Unlike other peptides, we can now selectively define the
scope of each individual peptide thus virtually programming the desired type of
repair or assistance. Vascular Growth Factor is a polypeptide that assists in
stimulating new blood vessel formation by helping to regulate angiogenesis which
is critical for repairing wounds or damaged skin. The Transformation Line
utilizes the breakthroughs in skin care research in the area of instructions
that are transmitted to cells and the cell's ability to interpret and carry out
the instructions, hopefully resulting in more normal, healthy and young looking
skin.
Antioxidant
Group is the result of medical research in the area of antioxidants
and their value in helping to reverse and prevent free radical damage. Free
radicals are highly unstable oxygen molecules with unpaired electrons that seek
other molecules with stable electrons to achieve their own stabilization. As a
result of free radicals attaching to a normal molecule, this molecule is
transformed into another free radical whose function and shape is now altered.
The damage caused by the free radicals can range from cell damage to ultimately
cellular death. The effects of free radical activity are manifested by lines,
wrinkles, dry skin, loss of elasticity, and skin discoloration. Antioxidants
have the capability of interrupting or preventing the effects of free radicals.
They provide electrons to the free radicals so that they could be neutralized
before they destroy other molecules. Jan Marini Skin Research has developed the
antioxidant product group by using substances that have benefits to aid in
preventing one of the primarily sources of cellular damage and aging.
Factor-A and Factor-A
Plus fall into the category of Retinoids. Retinoids are a group of
naturally occurring and synthetic compounds that have Vitamin A like biological
activity. They play a critical role in skin growth, repai and epithelial cell
differentiation. The most well know Retinoic acid compound is Retin-A. Retinoic
acid has proven to be effective prescription medication. Unfortunately this
compound has effects of mild to extreme redness and irritation. Recently
numerous university medical and research facilities have reported that Retinol
has the activity and efficacy of retinoic acid without the majority of the side
effects associated with Retin-A. Jan Marini Skin Research has identified new
stabilization and delivery components that enable Retinol to be delivered in a
stable fashion where it is converted into retinoic acid while avoiding redness,
peeling and irritation. Retinol has proven to be a potent tool in treating acne
by preventing the cells that line the follicular canal from sticking together
and creating the solid impactions that block the follicle. Factor-A and Factor-A
Plus contain the highest percentages of Retinol legally available.
The Benzoyl Peroxide Group is a potent and effective therapy for
treating acne. Benzoyl Peroxide is recognized by the American Academy of
Dermatology as being one of the most effective antibacterial agents to
significantly reduce the presence of P acne bacteria. P acne Bacteria is believe
to play a primary role in the inflammatory aspect of the acne process. P acne
bacteria thrives in an oxygen free environment and feeds on trapped oil in the
sebaceous follicle. It releases a toxic and corrosive by-product that works to
break down the follicle walls and encourage the leaks and ruptures that produce
acne lesions. The Benzoyls Peroxide Group works by reducing the P acne bacteria
colonies, thus reducing the inflammatory process and clearing acne lesions.
EnzymeLine utilizes Proteolytic enzymes proven to be the most effective
method of supplemental exfoliation at home. Proteolytic refers to an enzymatic
reaction that can digest dead protein material without harming healthy cells. A
common source of proteolytic enzyme is papain. Until now, green papaya could
never be harvested and formulated in a manner that would maintain the essential
activity. Jan Marini Skin Research has located and utilized the only available
source for this sensitive technology.
